May is Stroke Awareness Month

Identify Stroke Warning Signs

They are:

F FACE: Ask the person to smile. Does one side of the face droop?
A ARMS: Ask the person to raise both arms. Does one arm drift downward?
S SPEECH: Ask the person to repeat a simple phrase. Is their speech slurred or strange?
T TIME: If you observed any of these signs, call 9-1-1 immediately.

A stroke is a brain attack that occurs when a blood clot blocks an artery or a blood vessel breaks, interrupting blood flow to an area of the brain. Brain cells begin to die. Up to 80% of strokes are preventable!

May is Stroke Awareness Month

My father experienced a TIA (transient ischemic attack), or warning sign of a stroke a couple of weeks ago. Knowing he could not move and was only able to speak “help” was pretty scary. After a brief hospital stay, my dad came home.

Keep Your Heart and Brain Healthy

Focusing on diet, a Heart Healthy diet can lower cholesterol that can lead to plaque building in your arteries, and also reduce blood pressure, reducing strain on your blood vessels and inflammation.

Foods to include:

  • Fruits
  • Vegetables
  • Fish (salmon, albacore tuna, mackerel, herring or trout, which are rich in omega 3 fatty acids)
  • Whole-grain, high fiber foods
  • Dairy, fat free and low fat (1%) products
  • Beans
  • Lean meats like skinless poultry
  • A heart healthy diet includes using alternatives to salt for seasoning!

Spice Blend Instead of Salt

Spice blend recipe:

  • 5 tsp. onion powder
  • 2 ½ tsp. garlic powder
  • 2 ½ tsp. dry mustard
  • 1 ½ tsp. crushed thyme leaves
  • ½ tsp. white pepper
  • ¼ tsp. celery seed
  • Makes about 1/3 cup.
